Got an IRS Notice? The 5-Step Response Playbook

What to do the day an IRS letter arrives — how to read the notice number, respond within the deadline, and avoid making the problem worse.

Most IRS notices are routine and fixable. The wrong move is to ignore the deadline. Follow these five steps in order.

Step 1 — Read the notice number

It appears in the top or bottom right corner (for example CP2000, CP14, LT11). The number tells you exactly what the IRS is asking for.

Step 2 — Check the deadline

Every notice states a response window — usually 30 or 60 days. Calendar it immediately.

Step 3 — Verify the math

Compare the IRS calculation against your original return and source documents. About one in three notices contains an error.

Step 4 — Respond in writing

Send a written response with copies (never originals) of supporting documents by certified mail with tracking.

Step 5 — Escalate if needed

If the notice is a levy or lien threat, book time with a licensed tax professional the same week.
