ACA Subsidies Explained for Texas Families

How the premium tax credit works in 2026, who qualifies, and why most Texans see a lower monthly premium than they expect.

The Advance Premium Tax Credit lowers your monthly ACA premium based on household income and family size. Here is how it actually works.

How the subsidy is calculated

The IRS caps your health-insurance premium at a percentage of income tied to the second-lowest-cost Silver plan in your county — the benchmark plan.

Who qualifies in Texas

Households with income above 100% of the federal poverty level generally qualify. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so many low-income adults use ACA plans.

Open enrollment vs. Special enrollment

Open enrollment runs Nov 1 – Jan 15 each year. Life events (marriage, birth, loss of coverage, moving) trigger a 60-day Special Enrollment Period.

Reconciliation at tax time

Any advance credit is reconciled on Form 8962 with your tax return — report income changes during the year to avoid a surprise repayment.
