Medicare has four parts and two main paths. Once you see the shape of the system, choosing the right coverage becomes straightforward.
Part A and Part B — Original Medicare
Part A covers hospital stays. Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. Together they pay about 80% of approved services with no annual out-of-pocket cap.
Part C — Medicare Advantage
Private plans that combine A, B, and usually D into one plan with an out-of-pocket max — often with $0 premium but a network.
Part D — Prescription drugs
Stand-alone drug plans that pair with Original Medicare. Formularies vary — always check that your specific medications are covered.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement)
Pairs with Original Medicare and pays most of the 20% coinsurance. Plan G is the most common choice for new enrollees.
